LAURENT DELVAUX (1696–1778) Ecce Homo and Mater Dolorosa A pair of bust portraits. Bas-reliefs carved from Carrara marble. Signed “L.Delvaux” beneath the figure of Christ in the lower left corner. Virgin: 33.5 cm x 25.4 cm - Christ: 33.5 cm x 25.6 cm (Minor chipping around the edges) Description: Laurent Delvaux (Ghent, 1696 – Nivelles, 1778) was one of the leading sculptors of the former Netherlands in the 18th century. Trained primarily in Brussels and later active in London and Rome, upon his return he developed a style in which the Baroque heritage was gradually tempered by an elegant classicism. Appointed court sculptor, he received major religious and secular commissions, including the famous pulpit at St. Bavo’s Cathedral in Ghent. A similar effigy of the Virgin as Mater Dolorosa [Inv. No. 4015] by Delvaux is housed at the Royal Museums of Art and History in Brussels.
