IMPORTANT AUBUSSON RUG Woven with wool yarns on a cotton ground. A cream-colored field that brings brightness to a design of foliage motifs and rows of stylized, polychrome wreaths of flowers and foliage, framing a large circular central medallion with a powder-pink background, surrounded by an imposing garland of flowers and acanthus foliage that extends toward the borders. Beautiful color gradients—olive green, tobacco, ochre, and brown—are used in the rendering of the foliage and scrollwork. A wide border with a deep pink peripheral frieze frames the rug, adorned with acanthus volutes and classical rosettes, delimited by a double geometric border (small friezes of posts or ovals) that evokes the influence of ancient architecture characteristic of the Directoire period. Needle-worked in the Aubusson style. Directoire style. 536 x 354 cm. (Good overall condition) Expert: Frank Kassapian. Description: This rug embodies the classic elements of the Directoire style and French Neoclassicism. The composition of this piece blends the rigor of that era with the floral abundance inherited from the Louis XVI style.
