After Louis-Simon BOIZOT (1743–1809) The Coronation of the Rosière of Salency Porcelain biscuit sculpture. With an engraved inscription in a medallion: “VIRTUE REWARDED 1776.” Height: 36 cm - Width: 33 cm - Depth: 22 cm. (missing pieces and restorations; sold as is). Description: This bisque porcelain group is based on a composition by Simon-Louis Boizot depicting the tradition of the Rosière of Salency (Oise), a custom attributed to Saint Médard, Bishop of Noyon, in the 6th century. Each year, a young woman from the village, distinguished for her virtue and exemplary conduct, was solemnly presented with a crown of roses and a dowry. This custom, which endured through the centuries, reached its peak in the 18th century, a period during which it inspired artists and writers. The subject, imbued with grace and sensitivity, illustrates the period’s taste for moral virtues, rustic innocence, and idealized folk ceremonies.
