198 - AN EXTREMELY RARE 19TH CENTURY NEW ZEALAND INTEREST PARQUETRY BOX Early Colonial Period, by Josephus Hargreaves (Nelson, New Zealand) inlaid with various native specimen woods to the top, records suggest one of the earliest recorded immigrants who settled in Nelson was Mary Ann Clarke (Born 1811), wife of John Clarke (Born 1806) who arrived on the 8th of February 1842 (note the initials on this chest top MAC). 38 cm x 27 cm x 18 cm. Note: Yorkshireman and cabinetmaker Josephus Hargreaves arrived in Nelson in February 1842 with his family to establish a furniture-making business. Hargreaves brought his tools and Thomas King’s 1835 Modern style of cabinet work exemplified, a pattern book containing mainly neo-Grecian and Gothic designs. Hargreaves used t?tara to build numerous pieces in these ‘modern styles’. However, not all demands or tastes could be catered for. In 1846 Governor George Grey’s wife, Eliza, living in Auckland, complained that she had to send to Sydney for furniture because ‘nothing can be bought here.’ Wood-processing machinery to establish up-to-date factories arrived with an increasing surge of new settlers. Within a few years of Hargreaves’s death in 1856, a local furniture industry and furnishing warehouses had emerged in the main population centres.
