A beautiful two-tiered writing box made of burl veneer; the upper tier is intended for correspondence (restored and refitted), while the lower tier contains a fine pair of flintlock pistols in the style of Navy weapons from the 1770s. Octagonal barrels, later rounded and reinforced at the muzzle, smoothbore, chambered for 24-ball caliber. Round bronze lock bodies, round cast bronze lock pan, round swan-neck trigger, central-stop hammer with a slight upturn, hammer spring screwed in from the inside, all brass fittings, long-eared caps, round trigger guard, and a fully functional mechanism. The significant use of bronze in the construction of these weapons suggests that they were intended for naval use; the stocks have been refinished. Restoration of the mount on one of the pistols using wood putty at the counterplate Total length: 310 mm Condition 2
