173 - A fine saber from a private collection, belonging to an officer of the King’s Bodyguard during the First Restoration; it features a curved blade with a flat spine, a fuller, and a narrow groove running along the spine, with a terminal counter-edge; the blade is decorated on one side with trophies of arms, scrolls of foliage, the great arms of France, and a sun on one side (engraving embellished with ground gold on a blue peacock-tail-colored ground that is still clearly visible); the other side features, in addition to the trophies of arms, an oval cartouche inscribed with “Garde du Corps du Roi” (etched), and the ricasso of the blade bears the markings “Coulaux Frères” on one side and “Manufacture du Klingenthal” on the other. A very beautiful cast bronze mount chiseled in high relief, with a long-tailed cap adorned at the top with a fleur-de-lis, a main guard branch with an overhanging lip and a central palmette decoration; the main guard branch initially divides into three secondary strands curved in an “S” shape, joining and encircling the guard plate bearing a shield with the Great Arms of France, crowned on a draped field, an oak branch, and a laurel branch; beneath the shield, the Holy Spirit is depicted. Symmetrical guard plate with a cap cover; the tang is covered in stingray skin and filigree-worked with a chevron-patterned iron filigree; the point is aligned with the spine. It is housed in a leather scabbard with three brass fittings cut in an accolade shape. The pommel and wrist strap feature a brass ring on round python leather, with a long guard featuring an asymmetrical steel tip. The scabbard leather is supple, with some oxidation. A beautiful saber in need of cleaning.
