Early 18th-century Italian school, circle of Philipp Peter Roos (1655–1706) Young shepherdess accompanied by her dogs and her herd of goats in an Italianate landscape featuring ruins Oil on canvas (re-stretched) Signs of wear and restoration 56.3 x 74.3 cm In the early 18th century, pastoral scenes experienced a veritable boom in Italy, following in the footsteps of Philipp Peter Roos, known as Rosa da Tivoli, whose depictions of herds in idealized landscapes enjoyed great success. Blending references to antiquity, idealized nature, and careful observation of the animal world, these compositions celebrate an ideal of harmony inspired by Arcadia, which was very much in vogue in Italian painting of this period.
