Paul Strand, *La France de Profil*—Claude Roy & Paul Strand The book *La France de Profil* was published by the Guilde du Livre in 1952 and is the result of a collaboration between American photographer Paul Strand (1890–1976) and French writer Claude Roy (1915–1997). Blending texts that explore aspects of French culture with photographs, it offers a truly naturalistic portrait of postwar France. By using collages and various types of typography and calligraphy, Claude Roy provides texts of far greater value than detailed captions or writings that merely establish parallels with the image. It is thus through scenes captured in various parts of the country—rural life, fields, portraits of young and old people, café terraces, and more—that the artists succeed in creating a continuous and unpredictable dialogue between them.
