At the time, the Chinese Communist Party published these images in “China,” a magazine distributed in various languages around the world. Thomas Ruff’s work bridges the original offset printing grid with the digital pixel structure. In doing so, the artist translates 20th-century propaganda images into the visual language of the 21st century. This series, exhibited in 2021 in Paris on the walls of the prestigious David Zwirner Gallery, is now available in a large-format edition modeled after the 1978 book *Mao Tsetung, a Selection of Photographs*.
