Palampore, Coromandel Coast, India, for Europe, first half of the 18th century, cotton canvas painted and dyed using the resist and mordant techniques, primarily in black, red, and blue. The design features a lavish vase from which rises a tree whose branches bear heavy Indian flowers and pomegranates, providing shelter for numerous birds. At the base, two majestic peacocks stand on small mounds. Matching border featuring four vases, from whose spandrels garlands of flowers spill out (holes mainly along the border, significant stains, cut at the top), 241 x 145 cm. Related works: a decorative style similar to that of a palampore in the collection of the V&A in London (IS. 36-1950), on which one also notes the clumsy perspective of the vase’s neck.
