PICASSO (P.) - GLEIZES (Albert) - METZINGER (Jean). On Cubism. Paris, Compagnie Française des Arts Graphiques, 1947. In-4 (250 x 200 mm), gray slipcase, covers decorated with a Cubist mosaic design, plain spine with gilt lettering, burgundy suede endpapers and linings with two brass inserts, gilt edges, slipcase, case (bound by Paul Bonet). The first edition of this pioneering essay on Cubism, by two of its leading figures, Gleizes and Metzinger, was first published in August 1912, prior to the studies by Salmon and Apollinaire. At that time, it contained only reproductions. This is the first theoretical work on this artistic movement. This new 1947 edition not only presents this manifesto but also provides an opportunity for the two artists to reflect on the movement’s evolution 33 years later and to revisit certain events, such as the Cubist retrospective exhibition at the Galerie de France in Paris. A seminal work on Cubism, featuring 4 engravings based on works by Georges Braque, André Derain, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger, and 7 original engravings by Marcel Duchamp, Albert Gleizes, Jean Metzinger, Marie Laurencin, Francis Picabia, Pablo Picasso, and Jacques Villon.
