MIRBEAU (OCTAVE). *Dingo*. P., Vollard, 1924. Folio, morocco leather with a black man’s head motif, gold and embossed decoration covering the spine and covers, framed by morocco leather on the inside, purple deerskin endpapers, gilt edges on endpapers, illustrated cover and spine, slipcase (G. Cretté, successor to Marius Michel). PRINTED IN AN EDITION OF 370 COPIES; one of the first 30 copies on antique Japanese paper, numbered, containing a double set of etchings printed as inserts on Arches paper. A very beautiful volume, illustrated with 55 original etchings by Pierre Bonnard, including 14 printed separately. “Despite the scandal caused by *Parallèlement* and *Daphnis et Chloé*, Vollard persisted in the path of the artist’s book and devoted ever greater resources to this endeavor. He remained loyal to certain painters with whom he had worked for many years, such as Bonnard, who delightfully illustrated Octave Mirbeau’s earthy *Dingo* (1930). His etchings perfectly reflect the author’s cynical humor—for whom he harbored a genuine friendship—as well as his affection for dogs and cats, which are omnipresent in his work.” Clara Roca, “Ambroise Vollard. The Publishing Adventure,” in Limited Edition. Vollard, Petit, and Master Prints, Paris, Petit Palais, 2021, p. 49 and cat. 37. A very fine copy, bound in its original binding, enhanced with a sheet of five original pen-and-ink sketches by Pierre Bonnard, all monogrammed and engraved into the book (one header vignette and four ornate letters).
