JARRY (Alfred). Illustrated Almanac of Père Ubu (20th Century). Paris, available everywhere (A. Vollard), January 1, 1901. 2 vols., large 8vo in folios (287 x 203 mm), 56 pp. followed by 28 folios (for the remainder), illustrated cover. FIRST EDITION. It is illustrated with 83 exquisite lithographs printed in bistre, blue, and black (for the cover) by Pierre Bonnard. ONE OF THE FIRST 25 COPIES ON JAPAN PAPER, with a special dust jacket and the 83 lithographs printed in black. Conceived as a true almanac, it opens, as it should, with the calendar for the year beginning (the volume is undoubtedly the very first book of the century: it was printed on January 1, 1901) and was produced in a luxurious edition, a first for Jarry. This collaboration between Jarry, Bonnard—with the assistance of Félicien Fagus—and Vollard took shape in the basement of the influential art dealer’s gallery (who was also the almanac’s anonymous publisher), as he began to conceive of luxury illustrated books to promote contemporary artists. His first project had been published the previous year: *Parallèlement* by Paul Verlaine, a showcase for Bonnard’s sensual lithographs. Copy in perfect condition, as published. Johnson, Ambroise Vollard Editeur (Museum of Modern Art, 1977), 167. INCLUDED: VOLLARD (A.). Father Ubu in the Hospital. P., Vollard, 1916. Plate, 8vo, softcover, illustrated cover. First edition of Ambroise Vollard’s first work featuring Father Ubu, a testament to his great affection for Alfred Jarry’s character. Limited edition of 300 copies; this is one of the first 50 copies printed on Japanese paper. Repeated illustrated cover and frontispiece by Pierre Bonnard. JARRY (Alfred). Father Ubu in Aviation. G. Crès, 1918. Condition: as described. SET OF 4 VOL.
