ZOLA (Émile). *New Tales for Ninon*. Paris, Conquet, 1886. 2 vols., in-8, blue morocco, decorated spines, framed by 4 threads, 2 lines of dotted lines, and a garland on the covers, internal perforations, edges gilt on endpapers, cover preserved (Cuzin). An edition of 500 copies illustrated by Ed. Rudaux with a frontispiece and 30 etchings by the artist, contemporary with the book and typical of the period. ONE OF THE FIRST 25 COPIES ON JAPAN PAPER, containing three states of the engravings, including the pure etching. Superb copy, in an elegant contemporary binding signed by Cuzin père, to which has been added: 1) A very beautiful handwritten letter to a colleague (Paris, April 15, 1878, one page, in-8). Sending his new novel *Une Page d’Amour* to this colleague, Zola, who denies being: “an impassive man,” adds this comment: “Emotion must arise naturally from a literary work. It is pointless for an author to weep in order to make others weep. The ‘ohs’ and ‘ahs’ add nothing to a book’s power to move the reader... deep down, I take pride in being a passionate man.” 2) A magnificent signed autograph (one page, in-8 format on Japanese paper), an excerpt from one of his novels. From the A. Vautier library (ex-libris).
