FIRST EDITION and first printing. 36 pp. of text and drawings by Rodolphe Töpffer. The text is entirely handwritten, using a method developed by the author that allowed him to arrange his illustrations with the greatest flexibility for the layout. “The Essay on Physiognomy ranks first among Töpffer’s texts devoted to illustrated stories, both in terms of its length and its theoretical significance. Moreover, it constitutes a kind of artistic testament and the culmination of long-matured reflections ” (Goesten and Peeters, *The Invention of the Comic Strip*, 1994, p. 85.—Mirabaud, *Bibliography of the Works of Rodolphe Töpffer*, 1887, pp. 63–64). A very rare album and a copy of exceptional freshness.
