RABELAIS. Works. P., Desoer, 1820. 3 vols. in-18, red glazed half-calf, decorated spines, light brown title and volume labels, marbled edges (Lanne). A charming little edition, featuring a portrait after Desenne and 13 separate woodcut vignettes after Adam the Younger, engraved by Thompson. These plates, executed in a most unusual technique, represent one of the earliest attempts to revive woodcut illustration in France. Thompson, a student of Th. Bewick—the English inventor of end-grain woodcut—was the one who introduced this technique to France. A delightful copy, in a pretty and fresh Romantic binding, signed.
