O’ NEDDY (Philotée). *Feu et Flamme*. Paris: Dondey-Dupré, 1833. In-8, red long-grain half-maroquine, spine decorated lengthwise, corners, no. r., cover and spine consistent, (Cuzin). FIRST EDITION of this book, printed in a run of only 300 copies, and one of the rarest in the Romantic series. Philotée O’Neddy is an anagram of Théophile Dondey. The frontispiece, drawn and engraved by Célestin Nanteuil, is one of this artist’s finest and most beautiful works. Th. Gautier reports having seen C. Nanteuil create a print background by stamping his plate through the mesh of a piece of tulle: this technique is evident on the title page of *Feu et Flamme*. Considered the poetic manifesto of the literary group known as “Camaraderie” (to which Petrus Borel and Gérard de Nerval belonged), this collection of poems, imbued with a deeply “bousingot” lyricism, is regarded as one of the masterpieces of “frenetic” Romanticism. Asselineau devotes 17 pages of his “Bibliographie romantique” to this work. A very fine copy, elegantly bound by Cuzin with a signed dedication on the flyleaf.
