LA MESANGERE. Journal des Dames et des Modes. Paris, 1797–1818. 6 vols. in-8, full binding, light calfskin, spines decorated with title label and name on front and back, thread-bound on the covers, internal dentation, edges gilt. (Bound circa 1880). A PRECIOUS COLLECTION OF 1,783 PLATES, FROM THE INCEPTION (1797) TO 1818, COMPLETE, bearing at the top the title “Costumes parisiens,” the date, and the serial number of each plate; all are in the publisher’s original colors. Founded in 1797 by Jean-Baptiste Sellèque and taken over in 1801 by Pierre de La Mésangère, this famous fashion magazine was published until 1839. The outfits and headdresses featured provide a highly detailed overview of women’s fashion during the Directory, the Consulate, and the Empire. It also includes a few men’s outfits, as well as ball and theater costumes. THE EARLY VOLUMES OF THIS PUBLICATION ARE EXTREMELY RARE. A NICE COPY from the C. F. Crokat Library (bookplate). Colas, no. 1561. Brunet, III, 795. Vicaire, IV, 1106–1360. Gaudriault, *Répertoire de la gravure de mode française des origines à 1815*, 1988, pp. 229–261. Very slight scuffing on the binding.
