All of old Grenoble and the Dauphiné come to life here in these illustrations, which make this book one of the most beautiful illustrated volumes of the 19th century—a work whose publication was praised by Victor Hugo and J. Janin (See Mongland: “Le Romantisme des rapins à Grenoble,” in *Pèlerinage romantique*, Corti, 1968). These poems were first published in 1733. The author, François Blanc (1662–1742), known as La Goutte, was a grocer from Grenoble, “a man of means and afflicted by gout.” ONE OF THE EXTREMELY RARE COPIES ON CHINESE PAPER, printed on one side only, featuring a remarkable reproduction of the illustrations (paper not mentioned by Vicaire).
