BAUDELAIRE, DUFA S. (Charles). Salon of 1846. Paris: Michel Lévy, 1846. In-12, softcover, printed pink cover, slipcase. RARE FIRST EDITION of Baudelaire’s second work, bringing together a collection of bold reflections on painting, sculpture, and art criticism. It includes the famous passages on clichés, chic, color, the beauty of modern life, and a study of Ingres and Delacroix. A central theme runs through this book: the definition of Romanticism through modernity. Pichois-Ziegler, p. 228. The collection is signed “Baudelaire Dufaÿs” because, after being placed under guardianship in 1844, the author chose to add his mother’s name to his father’s. On the inside front cover, two of Baudelaire’s works are listed: “Les lesbiennes,” which would later become “Les Fleurs du Mal,” and “Le catéchisme de la femme aimée,” of which only a fragment, “Choix des maximes consolantes sur l’amour,” would be published. A copy in fine condition, preserved in paperback, as originally published. (Rust-stained edges.)
