A very beautiful letter from the end of his life. “I am deeply touched by the way you share in my sorrows. Yes, Dearest Friend, your presence eases these cruel moments. You charm what little intellect remains in me; you bring joy to this heart that has been so sorely tried by grief. You restore the poor sick man’s greatly weakened spirits, but alas, soon I shall be deprived of these comforts. I must leave for Italy as soon as possible. This is what Doctors Richet, Fournier, and Candemont decided this morning, saying that it would be the most powerful remedy for my sad illness. This departure will be very painful for me. No longer to follow you in your beloved studies, no longer to converse with you. In short, to sever the only vital bond I had found in you through our shared sentiments, our contemplative visions, and our judgment of life’s matters... I was so happy to be part of the development of your new career that I was as happy as I was proud... As for me, I am setting off on an adventure, doomed to be separated from my dearest affections. Forgive me for telling you all this. I am sad and in pain"...
