GUEROULT (Guillaume). *Les Fleurs du Livre des Vertus des Herbes*, originally composed in Latin verse by Macer Floride and illustrated with a commentary by Guillaume Guéroult, all translated into French by Lucas Tremblay. Rouen: M. and H. Mallard, 1588. In-8, red morocco, internal dentil, gilt edges (Chambolle-Duru). A very rare volume, dedicated to Henry III, whose title page is adorned with a lovely printer’s mark, featuring on the reverse a portrait of Lucas Tremblay, along with a few small ornamental letters and figures in the text representing herbs, all woodcut. *Les fleurs de Macer Floride* ends on page 75 with the word “Fin”; this is followed by a unique recipe for eye ailments, and then, on pages 76–80: *Description of the Nicotiana Herb: Its Properties and Virtues*. Guillaume Guérou, born in Rouen in the 15th century, was a physician in Caen and died around 1570. Lucas Tremblay, depicted in the volume at the age of 57, was a Parisian and a mathematician. A very fine copy, from the Germonière Library (bookplate, auction of April 29, 1966, cat. no. 181).
