CRENNE (Helisenne de) The Works of Lady Helisenne de Crenne. Namely, the painful anguish arising from love. Familiar Epistles and Invectives. The Dream of the Said Lady. All revised and corrected anew by her. Paris: Estienne Grouleau, 1553. In-16, blue morocco, wide lace, decorated spine, interior ribbing, gilt edges on marbled paper (Niédrée). Marguerite Briet, born around 1510 in Picardy and died around 1560, married Philippe Fournel, Lord of Du Cresne, before separating from him in 1552. It was therefore under her married name, Crenne, that she published her novels and epistles, of which *Les Angoysses douloureuses* is the most significant. She created the first French sentimental novel (see Louis Loviot in *Revue des Livres anciens*, pp. 137–145). The *Œuvres*, comprising Hélisenne de Crenne’s three major works—namely *Les Angoisses douloureuses*, *Les Épistres familières*, and *Le Songe*—were first published together in 1543 by Charles L’Angelier, without illustrations. Etienne Grouleau subsequently published five successive editions (1550, 1551, 1553, 1555, 1560), all illustrated with eight woodcuts within the text of *Les Angoisses douloureuses*. The text was edited by Claude Colet de Rumilly, as evidenced by his letter dated March 15, 1550, which appears on the final pages. A very fine copy of the third edition, adorned with lovely woodcut illustrations drawn and engraved by the same artists who created the illustrations for *L’Amour de Cupidon et de Psyché*, *Les Figures de l’Apocalypse*, and *La Tapisserie de l’Église Chrétienne*, also published by Grouleau. From the libraries of James Hartmann (1887, no. 435, bookplate) and Prince Sczanieski (auction of April 11, 1975, no. 35 in the catalog, bookplate). Listed in the *Bulletin Morgand* (Nov. 1887, No. 12844).
