BOUCHET (Jean). *The Poetic Judgment of Women’s Honor and the Abode of Illustrious, Pure, and Honest Ladies*, by Le Traverseur. Poitiers: J. and E. de Marnef, 1538. Small quarto, Gothic type, purple chagrin, gold garland between gold thread and blind-stamped designs, decorated spine, small internal notches, gilt edges. (English binding, ca. 1860). R. Brun. *The Illustrated French Book of the Renaissance*, 1969, p. 142. A unique and very rare edition, adorned with 11 beautiful woodcut illustrations; 5 of these plates bear the Cross of Lorraine as a signature. One of them depicts Francis I and another the assembly of the Parliament of Paris. This work is of great interest for the history of French poetic literature: M. Mayer, author of the study “The First French Sonnet: Marot, Saint-Gelais, and Jean Bouchet” (Revue d’histoire littéraire, 1967, No. 3, pp. 481–493) writes in his book *Clément Marot* (Nizet, 1972): “There is a collection of poems titled *Epigrammes*, published in 1538 by Jean Bouchet under the title: *Le Jugement poétic de l’Honneur féminin*..., which were composed before 1536 and are therefore the first sonnets in French literature.” The first sonnet was attributed to Clément Marot, who wrote a *Sonnet to Madame de Ferrare* in 1536. A VERY BEAUTIFUL COPY. From the libraries of Monsignor dalla Tramoglia (ex-libris), Serrant (stamp on the title page), and Double (1863, No. 91). A. Firmin Didot (1881, No. 211) and J. P. Barbier (1974, No. 8).
