BELLEAU (Remy). Poetic Works. Revised and corrected in this latest edition. Lyon: Thomas Soubron, 1592. 2 small volumes. in-12 bound in one volume, olive morocco, spine with 5 finely decorated raised bands, framed with straight and dotted thread on the covers with corner fleurons and a garland of foliage in the center, internal perforations, gilt edges (Capped). Reprint of the second collected edition, published by Mamert Patisson in 1585. This is the very first printing (the running title on fol. 96, vol. I, is printed upside down), consistent with Baudrier’s description (vol. IV, p. 353). The first volume contains *Les Amours & nouveaux eschanges des pierres précieuses*, *Discours de la Vanité*, *Eclogues sacrées* taken from the *Song of Songs*, *La Bergerie*, and *Apparances d’Arat*, by the Greek poet Aratus. The second volume contains *The Odes of Anacreon*, short original works and poems by the author, and *La Reconnue*. Remy Belleau soon joined Coqueret’s circle, alongside Ronsard, Du Bellay, and Baïf, and then the Pléiade in 1554. In 1556, he published his translation of the Odes of Anacreon, which enjoyed considerable success due to its lightheartedness and greater accuracy. He would become the first translator of Sappho’s works. A VERY BEAUTIFUL COPY, FINELY BOUND IN CLOTH (mid-19th century).
