ALBERTI (Léonis-Baptista). *Hécatomphile*. These are two compound Greek terms meaning “the hundredth love,” translated from common Italian into the French language. Along with *The Flowers of French Poetry* and other entertaining works. They are sold in Paris on Rue Neuve Notre-Dame under the sign of the Coat of Arms of France. By Alain Lotrian, 1540. In-16, 80 leaves, red morocco, covers adorned with a double frame of rows of thread. straight or curved, corner fleurons, spine decorated “à la rose,” lined with red morocco leather framed by a wide lace border enclosing a cipher in the corners adorned with fleurons, gilt edges. (Trautz-Bauzonnet, 1847). A charming and extremely rare volume, decorated with 54 woodcut illustrations, including one on the title page. It comprises three distinct parts. 1) *L’Hécatomphile* (ff. 2–25), a romance of love, a French prose translation of L.-B. Alberti’s *Ecatomphila*. 2) *Les Fleurs de poésie francoise* (ff. 25–54), containing 67 curious poems composed at the court of King Francis I, many by the king himself, and the others by Cardinal de Tournon, Marot, Saint-Gelais. On ff. 49 and 50 are two poems concerning the ladies of Paris and a defense of those ladies and a critique of those of Lyon, ending with this refrain: “Paris, without loss in the service of love.” 3) The Anatomical Blazons of the Female Body, poems by Marot, Maurice Scève, Cl. Chapuys, and V. Bordeaux. Most of these blazons are illustrated with figures. It contains the most provocative pieces from the collection of Méon’s Blasons, notably those that required preliminary sketches for this collection. This edition appears to be much rarer than its predecessors and is also more complete. The edition dated 1539, admirably described by Mr. Picot (Cat. Rothschild, I, 803), contains 62 poems in its second part, while this one contains 67. Here is the first line of each of these five new poems. Since my passion makes men hear (fol. XXXIII V°). “Lady, it is you who, by your beauty” (fol. XXXIII, R°). “If, by effect, one must give a name” (fol. XXXIII, R°). “I am a shadow without a heart, body, or face” (fol. XL, R°). A very fine copy, the only one cited in the Ruble auction catalog; it comes from the Count of Lurde (who had it bound with his monogram), from the library of the Baron de Ruble (No. 519 in the catalog), it had been part of the Bourdillon sale (cited by Brunet) and finally passed into the libraries of Ed. Rahir (2nd sale, No. 348) and a Lyon-based collector (sale of May 5, 1960, No. 1 in the catalog) A VERY BEAUTIFUL AND DELICATE TRAUTZ-BAUZONNET-LINED BINDING, DATED 1847.
