Sakti BURMAN (Kolkata, 1935) Woman on a Swing (Raga Hindola) Oil on canvas 27 x 22 cm Signed lower right Provenance Acquired from a gallery on Faubourg Saint-Honoré, Paris, in the 1990s. Private collection, Paris. We thank the artist’s estate for confirming the authenticity of this work. A certificate of authenticity may be issued at the purchaser’s expense. The subject evokes the raga Hindola (from hindola, “swing”), one of the six main ragas of the Ragamala tradition, associated with spring and traditionally depicted as a scene of a swing. Sakti Burman transposes this theme from Indian miniature painting into a small-format composition, where the figure, the portico, and the landscape blend into the same profusion of colors.
