19th-Century French School. “The Flight of the Chouans.” Oil on canvas, signed lower right (illegibly: Alph dene..). 74x92cm. Provenance: Nice Riviera Auction, 1984. Appraiser: Cabinet Chanoit, Paris. Between the 1860s and 1900, the theme of the Chouans’ revolt and sacrifice took on a highly romantic aura and found artistic expression. Numerous painters depicted episodes from the Wars of the Vendée and the plight of the peasants of the Chouannerie. This subject gained the status of history painting, and the works were exhibited in major Parisian and provincial salons. We were unable to decipher the signature on this beautiful and highly emblematic painting. Other well-known painters exhibited works on similar subjects at the salons: Alexandre Bloch, Jules Girardet, Julien le Blant, Charles Fortin, and Gustave Bourgeois.
