Eric Astoul (born in 1954) Untitled Sculpture Anagama-fired ceramic, ash glaze H40 L30 P20 cm Éric Astoul (born in 1954) One of the most renowned French ceramic artists of his generation, Éric Astoul has developed a practice deeply rooted in Asian ceramic traditions while establishing a highly original contemporary artistic language. His sculptures in stoneware or porcelain, often monochromatic, explore the tensions between form, material, and high-temperature firing in the traditional Japanese kiln: the Anagama. This type of firing—laborious and technically demanding—gives the works an inimitable plastic quality. Slims, mineral textures, chromatic variations, and surface irregularities emerge from a subtle balance between the unpredictability of the firing process and the ceramicist’s technical mastery. His works are included in numerous public collections in France and abroad.
