Léopold Gest Brutalist Candleholder Steel Circa 1970 H42 P21 cm Very good original condition, with traces of surface oxidation. With its thick forms and raw, unfinished steel, this candleholder embodies the Brutalist aesthetic that characterized the decorative arts of the 1960s and 1970s. It is characteristic of the work of Léopold Gest and the Artisans de Marolles, a group led by Jean Touret that championed the craft of hand-forged metal. It also reflects the spirit of Pierre Sabatier and Curtis Jeré, who used raw metal as a medium for artistic expression. The slight traces of oxidation contribute to the character of this piece, which has an almost sculptural presence.
