Karl Scheid (1929–2019) Untitled Set of two vases Glazed stoneware 1975–1976 H 10, W 15 cm and H 6.5, W 11 cm Karl Scheid (Germany, 1929–2019) opened his own studio in 1956 in Harlev, Germany; three years later, his wife, Ursula Scheid, joined him to collaborate on his creations. Beginning in 1979, the couple worked for Rosenthal, a German industrial porcelain manufacturer that fostered collaboration between artists and industry. Their work follows the continental tradition of firing at temperatures well above 1,300 degrees Celsius. Influenced by the ideas of Bernard Leach and Lucie Rie, they created pieces in stoneware and glazed porcelain, thrown on the wheel with great precision and technical mastery. Karl Scheid was one of three West German ceramicists to spend a year working at Crowan Pottery in Cornwall alongside Harry Davis.
