Theo Ruth (1915–1971) Set of three modular armchairs that form a sofa Three armless seating units, padded and upholstered in beige textured fabric, resting on a metal base. Each module features a seat with rounded corners and a slightly sloped backrest. When joined together, they form a three-seater sofa; their modular design also allows for separate arrangement. Produced by Artifort, Netherlands Circa 1950–1960 Each element: H72 W77 D72 cm. The set combines generous upholstered volumes with slender legs, which visually lighten the composition. The simplicity of the design and the modular concept are in line with the trends in mid-20th-century Dutch modern furniture. Born in Maastricht, Theo Ruth joined Artifort in 1936 and became head of the design and development department in 1939, a position he held until his death in 1971. As the company’s first in-house designer, he contributed to its evolution toward modern furniture that prioritized comfort and innovation. His “Congo” and “Penguin” armchairs are among his best-known creations.
