*CHAMPLAIN (Samuel de). Travels and Discoveries Made in New France from the Year 1615 to the End of the Year 1618. By Sieur de Champlain, Captain-General for the King in the Sea of the West. In which are described the manners, customs, clothing, methods of warfare, hunts, dances, feasts, and funerals of various indigenous peoples, as well as several remarkable events that befell him in said country, along with a description of its beauty, fertility, and climate. 1 small 8vo volume bound in a flexible period vellum binding with 2 laces preserved (out of 4) and 158 folios. Paris: Claude Collet, 1619 (Privilege granted on the 18th day of May 1619). FIRST EDITION. Complete with “The Continuation of the Journeys and Discoveries” at the end (ff. 120–158). Handwritten bookplate on the last endpaper: “This hare belongs to me, Jehan Goudin …”. The work covers the events and expeditions from 1615 to 1618. It is a major historical text, as Champlain recounts his journey up the Ottawa River, his penetration into Huron territory (present-day Ontario), and his contribution during a military campaign with his Indigenous allies against the Iroquois (present-day New York State). Wounded in the knee during these battles, he was forced to spend the winter of 1615–1616 among the Hurons, which allowed him to describe their customs and way of life in great detail. Missing the frontispiece title page, 4 of 6 plates, and 2 pages on the reverse side of 2 missing illustrations; open gutter; otherwise a VERY BEAUTIFUL COPY with a very fresh interior, free of foxing. EXTREMELY RARE.
