HUGO (Victor). Châtiments. 1 volume, in-32, bound in half burgundy morocco with corner pieces, spine with raised bands and ornate panels, gilt head, original cover preserved. Geneva & New York, n.p., 1853 (FIRST COMPLETE, UNCENSORED ORIGINAL EDITION). Since the publisher Hetzel was in exile in Brussels, two editions appeared simultaneously in November 1853; one, expurgated, was printed in Brussels by the typographer Henri Samuel and first published in in-16 format, while the other, the complete edition, was published in Jersey under the false designation: Geneva and New York, published under the name of the Imprimerie Universelle. This edition, in small in-32 format, was smuggled into France thanks to the clever ruses of peddlers and despite police surveillance. (Hugo Album, La Pléiade, 1964, pp. 223). This complete first edition—the only one corrected by Hugo—contains the scathing passages and the names of the figures attacked by the poet. A VERY BEAUTIFUL COPY. Ref: Vicaire IV, pp. 312 – Talvart IX, pp. 32–33 – Carteret I, p. 415
