FRANKENTHAL Title: Mythological Porcelain Ensemble “The Abduction of Helen.” Date: 1777. Designer: Model by Johann Wilhelm Lanz, ca. 1757. Material: Porcelain, decorated in polychrome and gold. Dimensions: Height 33 cm. Mark: CT mark painted in blue underglaze with a crown, year '(17)77', remnants of an old adhesive label. Description: On a naturalistically decorated, undulating base stands a small boat; inside it, Paris, clad in antique-style armor, lifts Helen with both arms; at his feet, a kneeling oarsman is dropping the boat’s anchor. The composition of this porcelain ensemble is based on a print by Louis Desplaces (1682–1739), which in turn was based on a drawing by Charles-Joseph Natoire (1700–1777). The figures’ sophisticated postures are characterized by great complexity and a marked sense of movement. The figure of Helen, with her right arm raised, forms the vertical axis of the overall composition. The slightly bent upper bodies of Helen and Paris, emphasized by the flowing drapery, lend the group a dynamic effect and avoid any sense of static rigidity. The muscular relief, particularly prominent in the figure seen from behind, is finely and intricately modeled. The light skin tone of the main figurine contrasts effectively with the slightly rosy complexion of the oarsman. Bibliography: - Baeucamp-Markowsky, Barbara: Frankenhtaler Porzellan.
