ROTH, EMMY Title: Pair of Silver Four-Light Candlesticks. Date: 1920s. Material: Silver. Weight approx. 3,020 g. Dimensions: Height 43.5 cm. Hallmark: Marked 800, crescent & crown, as well as the signature “Emmy Roth.” Emmy Roth was one of the few artists whose individual and unmistakable style was recognized during her lifetime and which met with a great public response both at home and abroad. Between 1925 and 1933, Roth’s works were exhibited at numerous shows. Among the most significant events that helped shape modern tastes was the Leipzig exhibition “Europäisches Kunstgewerbe 1927,” at which Emmy Roth was represented, among other pieces, by a tea infuser, which was purchased by the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts. The artist’s success was also evident in the enduring success of her own workshop in Berlin-Charlottenburg, which she ran until she was forced to flee following the National Socialists’ seizure of power. The pair of candelabra offered here embodies the essence of her aesthetic principles, which clearly and unambiguously emphasized the functionality, practicality, and harmony of the objects. The organic lines characteristic of Roth’s work are particularly evident in the design of the base, where the static form is broken up and the material’s plasticity is brought to the fore. The idea of movement and fluidity is also carried through into the upper section. The elegantly curved lamp arms, which extend diagonally from the shaft, create a subtle wave-like effect that is echoed in the gentle curve of the lampshade’s rim. Yet the overall impression remains thoroughly harmonious and balanced thanks to the deliberate repetition of individual forms—for example, where the lampshades echo the shape of the stem. Specifically designed to create a striking interplay of light and shadow, this pair represents an elegant realization of the complex interplay between volume and balance.
