VON ESSEN, RUTGER Cologne Title: Large Coin Scale. Date: Presumably before 1600. Material: Box made of pear wood. An iron scale with brass pans and green cords. Brass weights. Dimensions: 2.5 x 21 x 10.5 cm. Mark: Inscribed on the lid: “Made by M. Rutger von Essen, wagon maker in Cologne, located here on Sint Jans Street, next to the bathhouse steps,” as well as additional inscriptions. One of the weighing pans is marked. Description: A large, rectangular box with ornamental embossed and engraved decoration. Inside the drawer, labeled with weight markings in black ink, are 40 weights bearing coin designs. Beneath the lid are five balancing weights. The beam scales have one round and one triangular pan.
