HEIDEN, THEODOR Munich Title: Rare Silver Lidded Goblet with the Wilhelmine Imperial Crown. Material: Silver with interior gilding and partial gilding. Bronze, iron. Weight approx. 590 g. Dimensions: Height 29.5 cm. Seal: Marked on the rim of the lid with a crescent and crown, 800 hallmark, maker’s mark Theodor Heiden (royal Bavarian court goldsmith, from 1864 onward). Description: The shaft, fashioned in the shape of an oak trunk, rises from a simply scalloped circular base. Its branches, some adorned with fully sculpted oak leaves, support the spherical kuppa. On its embossed surface, the tree’s branches continue in the form of a relief. Here, three silver coins are set circumferentially. The collar-shaped, slightly flared rim is inscribed circumferentially with the words “God was with us / To Him be the glory” and features two coats of arms. An Iron Cross from 1870 is set into the slip lid with a wavy rim; this is crowned by an imperial crown modeled in the round. Set into the oak trunk, as if held in place by the branches, is a medal that was struck in 1885 to commemorate Prince Otto von Bismarck’s 70th birthday and his 50th anniversary as Imperial Chancellor. On the underside of the base is the engraved dedication: “It is a memento of a great era that consecrates this goblet + Capt. Ludwig Karl Lufft and Johanna, née von Beck” It may be assumed that the Iron Cross set into the lid—which King Wilhelm I donated in 1870—was awarded to Captain Ludwig Karl Lufft, who is mentioned in the inscription, and that he had it set into the cup as a memento.
