GIOVANNI LANFRANCO (scope of) Alexander refuses water Oil on canvas, 120x156.5 cm The painting under consideration is a version of a painting by Giovanni Lanfranco kept at the Pietro Manodori Foundation in Reggio Emilia. he rather rare theme is that of the feeling of egalitarianism and solidarity with one's army. The leader, in pursuit of Darius' army, encountered some peasants who were bringing water to their children. Learning that the sons had voluntarily given up the water to offer it to him, he refused it even though he knew he was risking his life, claiming that if he did so his soldiers would lose courage.
