ANDREA MICHIELI, KNOWN AS ANDREA VICENTINO Saint Sylvester and Angels Oil on canvas with a cuspidate edge, 86x130 cm According to an ancient early medieval tradition associated with the Sabina region (in Lazio), Pope Sylvester I had a vision of two angels on Mount Tancia. It is said that a terrible dragon lived at the summit of the mountain, terrorizing the local population. Pope Sylvester climbed the mountain and, guided and protected by the vision of two angels sent by God, managed to defeat or subdue the monstrous creature. Andrea Vicentino is a little-known artist who works in the tradition of the late Titian-inspired styles of Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese. He trained in Vicenza under Giovanni Antonio Fasolo (1530–1572) and Giambattista Zelotti (1526–1578); in 1648, Ridolfi praised his skills as a colorist. By the mid-1640s, he was documented in Venice, where he was establishing himself as a history painter, specializing in works of a celebratory and documentary nature. Bibliography: See R. Pallucchini, *La Pittura veneziana del Seicento*, Milan 1993, I, pp. 37–41
