FRANCESCO MONTELATICI KNOWN AS CECCO BRAVO Judith decapitates Holofernes, c. 1650. Oil on canvas, 166x124 cm The marked sensuality of the young woman is accentuated by the transparency of her disheveled robe during the crude act of decapitating Holofernes. The face, with classical features, is lit with disdain as the arm is raised to brandish the sharp sword. Holofernes is little more than a despicable extra. The canvas can be dated to around the 1850s, when the painter abandoned the naturalistic vein of his youth to work with brushstrokes of flaky color, contrasts between transparencies and strokes of fuller material, between glows and backlight effects. The main scene is thrust into the foreground and the backgrounds are lost in distant, blurred landscapes veiled in gray tones.
