JANZ CLAES VAN DER WILLIGEN (attributed to) The Burning of Sodom with Lot and His Daughters Fleeing Oil on canvas, 73x93 cm The theme of the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, like the burning of Troy, was a favorite of Flemish artists because of the opportunity it offered to depict striking contrasts of color and light. The pursuit of luminous effects is evident in this work. Little is known about Claes Jansz. van der Willigen, who likely lived in Rotterdam his entire life. It appears that he produced mainly a small body of landscape paintings, including scenes of fires very similar to the work presented here.
