GIOVANNI AGOSTINO CASSANA Still Life with a Rooster and a Guinea Pig Oil on canvas, 61x48 cm The proud bird is one of the favorite subjects of a unique animal painter active between the late 17th and early 18th centuries: Giovanni Agostino Cassana. Little is known about him; the main information comes from Ratti, who identifies him as the son of the Ligurian painter Giovanni Francesco Cassana. He is said to have trained with Strozzi in Genoa and subsequently moved to Venice. We possess only a very small number of authentic, signed, and dated works by him. The painting presented here is tangible evidence of Cassana’s mastery and aesthetic sensibility as an animal painter. Bibliography: M. Mosco, *Natura Viva in Casa Medici: Animal Paintings from the Palazzo Pitti Depositories with Examples from the Museo della Specola*, Florence, 1986, under the relevant entry
