Attributed to Claude JACQUAND (1804–1878) The Young Gaston, known as the Angel of Foix Oil on canvas 82 x 116 cm Unframed A reproduction of Jacquand’s painting from the 1838 Salon, now in the Louvre. Claudius JACQUAND (1804–1878) was born on December 16, 1804, in Lyon and died on April 2, 1878, in Paris. He studied under Fleury Richard at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon and won first prize in painting in 1821. He began exhibiting at the Lyon Salon in 1822 and at the Paris Salon in 1824. His work was admired by Louis Philippe, who purchased *Louise Labé Presented to Francis I* in 1834; as a result, Jacquand received an official commission for seven paintings for the Versailles Museum. He moved to Paris in 1836 and was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1839. He left Paris and settled in Boulogne-sur-Mer between 1852 and 1855, where he was commissioned to decorate City Hall. In 1857, he was once again commissioned by the authorities to create *The Coronation of the Virgin*, painted on a gold background. His historical and genre paintings are skillfully composed and executed with great finesse. He oscillated between Symbolism, religious art, and historical realism, in a Neo-Renaissance style that drew its themes from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
