Joseph Ignace GUILLOTIN (1738–1814), French physician and deputy, inventor of the guillotine. Signed document. Paris, 13 Vendémiaire, Year III. 1 p., folio. An interesting document referring to the appointment of Citizen Barbier—that is, the French geographer and cartographer Jean-Denis Barbié, known as BARBIE DU BOCAGE (1760–1825)— “to the National Library for hand-drawn maps and plans, for the appraisal and valuation of all items pertaining to geography and originating from the homes of condemned or deported émigrés [ ].” Beautiful signature by Guillotin.
