Auguste RENOIR (1841–1919). Signed autograph letter addressed to Paule Gobillard (1867–1946), a French Post-Impressionist painter, niece of Berthe Morisot, model and student of Auguste Renoir and Henri Gervex, and cousin of Julie Manet. No place, no date. Friday [postmark dated January 4, 1911]. 1 page, in-12 format. Envelope preserved with stamp and postmarks. My dear little friend, I have agreed with Mr. Thomas on the tip for the maids. I’ll come see you tomorrow around 5 or 6 o’clock to wish you a safe trip. Best regards to both of you. Renoir. Paule Gobillard (1867–1946) learned to paint from her aunt, Berthe Morisot, for whom she also served as a model. Through her, she received instruction from Auguste Renoir and formed a friendship with him. Her sister Jeannie had married Paul Valéry. Berthe Morisot painted a portrait of Mr. Thomas [probably the father of Marie-Cornélie Thomas]. Beginning in 1894, Paule Gobillard exhibited her paintings at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. Thanks to Durant Ruel, she went on to exhibit her works all over the world.
