André MASSON (1896–1987). Signed autograph letter addressed to a dear friend [André BRETON]. Antibes, October 21 [1925]. 2 pp., in-4. Binder holes that do not affect the text. An interesting letter regarding the Surrealist group’s political involvement. I have received the latest issue of *La Révolution surréaliste*—the cover photograph seems to me a good omen—and I want to tell you, my dear friend, with what admiration I reread the “Letter to the Seers,” which far surpasses its title. - This issue, incidentally, strikes me as impressive from start to finish. I have begun reading a rather voluminous book by Gobineau, *The Religions and Philosophers of Central Asia*—the opening sentences of this book, though they say nothing we do not already know, comfort me: Everything we think and all the ways in which we think have their origin in Asia. I am well aware of how much, for my part, I am averse to taking action (in the European sense of the word), but I think it remains understood between us that we must ultimately take action, and that we will never allow ourselves to be enslaved by trends that will only help us destroy (in part) what offends us. What matters most to us is possible only through a sense—I dare not write “knowledge”—of eternity. Masson then expresses outrage at a statement by Édouard Herriot at the Radical Party convention in Nice: Herriot, Ford, Hindenburg, politicians, and industrialists—all these swine are sentimental [ ].
