André LHOTE (1885–1962). Signed autograph letter addressed to Max von Muhlenen. No place, February 8, 1942. 1 p. in-4. The painter invites his student to visit his studio: Just mentioning the name Von Muhlenen is enough to capture my attention and my affection. But I see that you are part of that small group that I loved so much and whose absence I found so hard to bear. So please come Friday morning to the Academy on Rue d’Odessa (18). I’ll be giving lessons there that day. This is until my studio on Rue Boulard can be heated on Thursdays, for the benefit of my friends [ ]. Lhote then refers to an article he published in the N.R.F., asking him: Please erase from your memory the typo that renders the last lines of the letter unintelligible [...] where the word “conçu,” which clarifies the text, is ridiculously replaced by the word “connu,” which makes the text nonsensical [ ]. A great teacher, André Lhote founded his Academy in 1925 at 18 Rue d’Odessa, near the Montparnasse train station. There he taught many artists, notably Max Rudolf von Muhlenen (1903–1971), a Swiss painter, glass artist, and educator, and co-founder of the avant-garde group Der Schritt in 1931.
