Charles LINDBERGH (1902–1974), American pilot and aviation pioneer. Autograph letter signed “Charles A. Lindbergh,” addressed to Mrs. Cunningham. Honolulu, October 17, 1969. 5 pp., in-4. A long and interesting letter regarding the writing of his autobiography: “[ ] The corrected two hundred pages were mailed yesterday. You should have received them by the time you get this letter. Your skillful and perceptive editing is of tremendous help. It lets me do in hours what might otherwise have taken days. Very many thanks. As for my plans and the last approximately eight hundred pages: I will be in the Hawaiian Islands until Monday, then fly to Southeast Asia. I should arrive in the Philippines next week [ ].” He continues, “At your office, I suggested sending the last 800 pages—after you have finished editing them—to me in the Philippines [ ]. “At the Friday-morning meeting in Mr. Javonovich’s office, I said I would like to have the complete first-draft manuscript before starting to read it. On second thought, I believe it would be better for me to start reading the first draft as soon as the sections you have personally double-checked are available. Perhaps we can save some more time this way. Of course, I leave the decision up to the circumstances and to you!” Lindbergh would go on to write two more books after 1969, which were published by his friend and publisher William Jovanovich [also the publisher of Umberto Eco, Hannah Arendt, etc.]: *The Wartime Journal of Charles A. Lindbergh*, published in 1970 (comprising over a thousand pages), and *Autobiography of Values*, published posthumously, which runs to over 2,000 pages.
