Paul VALERY (1871–1945). Signed autograph poem titled “Les Grenades.” 1 p. in-4. A very beautiful poem by Paul Valéry, with variations: “Hard pomegranates, half-open / Yielding to the excess of your seeds / I seem to see sovereign foreheads / Shattered by their discoveries! / If the suns you have endured, / O half-open pomegranates, / Have caused you, driven by pride, / To crack your ruby partitions, / And if the dry gold of the rind, /At the behest of a force, / Bursts into red gems of juice, / This luminous rupture / Makes the soul I once had dream / Of a secret architecture. Variants: “Makes the soul dream” instead of “Makes a soul dream”; “A secret” instead of “Of its secret architecture.” “Charmes” appeared as a pamphlet in *La nouvelle revue française* in 1922.
